Best Schools in Burlington

What neighbourhoods have the best schools in Burlington? This is a question we hear all the time as Realtors. For parents with young children relocating to a new city, investigating the educational options is often a top priority. Fortunately, with forty-five elementary schools spread out across the city, Burlington has plenty to choose from.

*See this custom Interactive Map of Burlington Elementary Schools for neighbourhood locations, Fraser Institute scores and rank information.*

As a realtors and parents, we understand the importance of finding a neighbourhood that meets both your housing needs and provides the educational opportunities you are looking for. Consequently, we have spent a great deal of time familiarizing ourselves with Burlington’s schools: the Fraser institute ranking, special programs, the district maps, and speaking with parents themselves to find out about their experiences. The most significant discovery is that there aren’t any truly “bad” schools in Burlington.

A popular method many parents rely on to evaluate an area’s schools is the Fraser Institute Report Card. The FI Report Card offers a detailed breakdown of each school’s academic performance based on the Education Quality and Accountability Office (or EQAO) test results at the Grade 3 and Grade 6 levels. Students’ performance and attitudes are measured in reading, writing and mathematics and the results are posted in a separate report on the EQAO website for each school. These tests show the overall trend over the last five years, and test results are updated annually.

While the FI Report Card gives the public a snapshot of each school’s academic performance in a given year (as measured against the provincial average), some parents feel that it isn’t necessarily an accurate reflection of the quality of a school. And the Halton District School Board warns parents to understand the limitations of such standardized testing and to do more investigation before deciding on a school.

That said, many parents will find the results that the Fraser Institute report yields quite interesting (as a measurement of the reading, writing and math skills in a given year). Consequently, we have decided to base the ranking of Burlington schools on this report. In order to acknowledge the limitations of the Fraser institute report we are also including other important information such as: school size, location, special programs, % English as a second language, the school website, link to the EQAO results and parents’ comments. If you would like to further your investigation of the local schools I encourage you to speak with other parents, visit the Halton District school board’s website and/or connect with a faculty member for a tour.

After reading through the list provided, we think you will deduce that excellent schools in Burlington will not be difficult to find. And hopefully, you will be comforted by this knowledge as you search for a home to buy in this wonderful city.

“St. Elizabeth Seton Elementary Catholic School in the Orchard provides a values-driven, caring, academic environment for its students. Our two children, currently in Grade 7 and 8, have attended the school since Junior Kindergarten. We have found the faculty and administrative staff to be dedicated to the development of its students by encouraging and supporting them to reach their highest potential, whether it be through their academic studies, sports teams or clubs. Having intermediate children, we’ve also been impressed with how closely they work with Corpus Christi in preparing their students for High School. In summary, St. Elizabeth Seton has provided our children with a wonderful elementary experience, where they’ve gained confidence, made lasting friendships and had fun along the way.” Wade and Zoey

“Glenview is a lovely school, which both our children had the privilege of attending. We can’t say enough about the wonderful teachers and staff. They were all very caring, compassionate and dedicated individuals. I think what we remember the most about this special place that we belonged to for so many years, is the very strong sense of community that we felt during our time there”

My kids go to Ecole Renaissance at Maple and Lockhart Sts in Burlington. It’s a small family oriented all French school. I have no specific complaints. Suggestions for the school include celebrating diversity including black history month. Also better curriculum around bullying (although I think most schools need this).

The FI report is only based on the EQAO tests so it really doesn’t tell you a lot. John William Boich is great! Only a few years old and the staff are great!! I would be sad to leave it if we ever move. I don’t like that JWB doesn’t have playground equipment and that they didn’t build the parking lot or gym big enough – so many kids that they can’t accommodate everyone to hold one concert (winter or spring).”

“I have children at Dr Charles Best and Sir Ernest Macmillan. Love both schools but especially DCB. It’s a smaller school that only goes up to grade 5 and then feeds into Macmillan for 6,7 &8. But the teachers there are awesome and it’s a very tight knit community. I love Macmillan because my oldest was able to take late French immersion in grade 7 and will be continuing in FI in high school next year. I think it may be the only school in Halton to have the late French immersion program so there are many students that even come from Milton and Oakville to attend.”

“After living in Burlington for 12 years we moved into the Millcroft neighbourhood because of the great schools. We wanted our daughter to attend the best public school in the area. Millcroft is home to 3 great primary schools, 2 public and 1 Catholic school. Now in her 4th year at Florence Mears public school, our daughter is very happy with her school, her friends and her neighbourhood. Moving to Millcroft was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made!”

“We love Tom Thomson for its small community feel, despite it actually being quite large. Every teacher we’ve met so far has been amazing, which is a testament to the very involved and friendly principal. It doesn’t hurt that the school offers French Immersion, as well as the regular English stream, so no matter which side our kids end up on (or change their mind about), we will never have to switch schools…until they graduate grade 6, anyway.”

Ascension is one of the smaller schools in the area which creates a tight-knit sense of community. In my daughters Grade 2 class, there are only 19 students. There is also a before and after school program which is a great option for working parents.”
