As we’re glued to our TVs watching the Blue Jay’s incredible playoff run, we’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge Burlington’s own Mattingly Romanin. Our homegrown talent is currently chasing his dream of suiting up and hitting the Rogers Centre field.
The local hero attended Chicago State University and was taken in the 39th round, 1,172nd overall, by the Toronto Blue Jays.
He told the Hamilton Spectator that it was an incredible thrill to hear he was drafted by the Jays, after being passed on by so many other teams.
“I was actually just freaking out,” said Romanin.
“I got a big hug from my dad.”
From Burlington to The Blue Jays Roster
Romanin attended Notre Dame Secondary School, before taking his talents to get the type of exposure his game needed. At Chicago State, he went on to break the schools’ records for hits, doubles, runs batted in and total bases. He also sits second all time in runs and walks.
He is currently paying his dues in the minor leagues and was assigned to play for the Bluefield Blue Jays, in a Rookie Appalachian League representing the twin cities of Bluefield, West Virginia, and Bluefield, Virginia.
He has been very active on Twitter during the Jays’ current playoff run, sharing his experience and insight. He also took a chance to respond to Fox broadcaster Harold Reynolds, who implied that Canadians can’t catch during a broadcast.
Romanin tweeted “Man, I really liked and respected Harold Reynolds before tonight. He is much better than that.”
Well, this Canadian talent certainly can catch, and we look forward to following the young 2nd baseman’s career as he works his way up to “The Big Show.”
