Burlington was named the #1 City and Canada was Named the #1 Country So…We’re basically the best place on earth to live. There we said it!
And given the lack of breathable atmosphere elsewhere, we’re calling Burlington the best place in the galaxy for humans to live.
Kidding aside, Burlington residents were proud when our city was named the best mid-sized city in Canada by Moneysense magazine for the last 3 years in a row. Just as all Canadians feel great when Canada is routinely ranked as one of the best places to live in the world.
Most recently, Canada was ranked first overall in the “quality of life” category in The inaugural “Best Countries” ranking from U.S. News & World Report, by the University of Pennsylvania.
And if you think about it, what could be more important than quality of life?
The team determining the ranking looked at things like education, public health care, safety and economic stability.
Here’s a look at how the City of Burlington measures up to those categories:
Education
The Halton Catholic school board is routinely ranked as the top (or among the top) school boards in the GTA. At the same time, our secondary schools like Lester B Pearson, Corpus Christi, Aldershot and Nelson all consistently receive exceptional grades from the Fraser Institute’s rankings.
As for colleges and universities, The City of Burlington recently unveiled their 25-year plan, which includes working with schools like Mohawk, Sheridan, Brock and McMaster to provide local post secondary options and better access to research and development for local business.
Public Health Care
Burlington has top-notch health care, with even more facilities on the way.
The City has committed $60 million to expanding Joseph Brant Hospital. The facility already treats over 250,000 patients each year. When updates are complete in 2017, they will offer:
- 172 acute inpatient beds
- A new emergency department
- A larger cancer clinic
- Nine new operating rooms
- Expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services
Safety
Burlington is also an amazingly safe community to raise a family.
In fact, it’s never been safer. In 2015, it was announced that Halton’s crime rate was at the lowest point in the region’s history. Statistics Canada numbers say that Halton is the safest community in the country among those with populations of more than 100,000.
Police Chief Stephen Tanner credited these numbers to, “a combination of living in a secure community with low unemployment and the work our officers are doing.”
Economic Stability
Our strong economy and employment opportunities were a big part of Moneysense ranking Burlington so high.
This includes strong numbers like:
- Estimated Unemployment Rate: 4.27%
- Median Household Income: $85,434
- Average Household Discretionary Income: $54,630.06
Those are the Statistics. Now Come See the Intangibles
