How Lockdown Has Changed the Way You Look For Your Next House

It’s funny how a case of cabin fever will change how you look at your home.

You have probably felt the walls close in around you during this lockdown. You may also be kicking yourself for not getting a house with a finished basement, bigger yard, or home office… Or soundproof dome.

Not a lot of people are buying houses in Burlington at the moment. Real Estate has been deemed essential. But, the only people buying and selling are the ones who essentially have to make a move. But that doesn’t stop you from thinking about your next house.

And after a few months of being locked in your home, you might put the following things on your revised must-have list.

A Home Office

Do you cackle like a crazy person when a coworker asks you if there is someplace quiet you can take a Zoom call?

Scores of people have been forced to work from home for the first time ever. And many have learned that working from the kitchen table or setting up a card table in the basement isn’t going to get it done. You need an office, not just a “workspace.”

This means that the next wave of homebuyers will likely place a higher-than-ever value on a home office.

A home office could be:

Pretty much, any-damn-place that is quiet, really.

The Backyard

If you have a backyard, it’s likely your COVID-crisis MVP so far. Most parents are now calling their trampoline the best purchase they have ever made.

The weather this spring hasn’t been great, but it doesn’t matter. The backyard has been where we have turned our kids loose for as long as possible, in an effort to get them to burn off some of that excess energy.

If you don’t have a backyard right now, it is most likely a deal-breaker for your next home.

Walking Trails, Sidewalks and Wide Streets

Peloton bikes and treadmills are great (I assume), but they don’t get you outside.

If you live in a condo or in a congested downtown core right now, you’re probably wishing you had some nearby wide-open outdoor space to take the family for a walk or bike ride. Or simply go for a jog to give yourself some alone time.

You’re probably thinking it’s time to swap the condo life for a house, in a proper neighbourhood with a big backyard. You’re probably thinking about making the big move from the big city. And you’re probably looking at nearby communities like Burlington.

If that’s the case, I know a woman who can help you with that!

Everything You Need to Know About Burlington's New Open House Rules

After months of lockdown, the Ontario Government has lifted restrictions in York, Halton, and Durham Regions as of Friday, July 24.
